Assemblyman Tom O’Mara (R,I,C-Big Flats) this week helped to promote the state’s agricultural and dairy industries at the Assembly Republican Conference’s annual “Dairy Day” reception in Albany, which is held every year in recognition of June as “National Dairy Month.”
“Agriculture is a vital part of the state’s economy and is an important employment sector throughout Upstate New York,” said O’Mara. “I will continue to work in Albany to promote New York’s agricultural and dairy industries to help ensure that New York continues to be one of the top dairy producers in the nation.”
Assemblyman O’Mara noted that agriculture is an intricate part of the state’s economy, with an estimated 6,400 dairy farms currently in operation, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. New York also ranks third in the nation when it comes to dairy production. Total milk production in New York during 2009 was approximately 12.4 billion pounds.
“Dairy Day is a great event that celebrates the achievements of dairy farmers and provides a chance for elected officials to show their support for legislation benefiting farmers and small businesses,” said O’Mara. “I am honored to represent some of the finest dairy farmers in the state who provide us with some of the best dairy products in the nation.”
Vendors featured at the Dairy Day event included The American Dairy Association and Dairy Council; Cabot Creamery Cooperative; Dairylea Cooperative Inc. and Dairy Farmers of America, Northeast Council; Garelick Farms; Hillcrest Dairy; H.P.
