O’MARA: ASSEMBLY DEMOCRATS ATTACK 2ND AMENDMENT RIGHTS INSTEAD OF TACKLING STATE BUDGET
5/22/2010

Assemblyman Tom O’Mara (R,I,C-Big Flats) today blasted Assembly Democrats for passing legislation designed to curb New Yorker’s 2nd Amendment Right, instead of tackling the state budget and avert the furlough of state workers.

“Instead of holding budget hearings and leaders meetings to work out this year’s budget, which is 42 days late, Assembly Democrats have decided to pass meaningless bills about the shrinking Sea Horse population and undermining New Yorker’s 2nd Amendment Right,” said O’Mara.  “It is just more of the dysfunction and fiscal irresponsibility that has eroded the public’s confidence in state government.”

Assemblyman O’Mara noted that the bills would have a negative effect on the state’s hunters, outdoor enthusiasts and the state’s firearm manufacturers and dealers.  Assemblyman O’Mara also remarked that only one of the bills taken up today has a Senate sponsor, meaning that there is little chance the legislation will become law.

“Assembly Democrats today wasted time debating bills that have little chance of ever becoming law and once again neglected their responsibility of passing this year’s budget,” said O’Mara.  “The Democratic Majority’s procrastination is hurting the state and will soon cost state workers one fifth of their salary.”

Legislation debated today included A.6468-B, which would prohibit the sale of semi-automatic pistols manufactured after January 1, 2011 unless such pistol is micro-stamp ready and A.10894, which requires Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) to submit a report regarding handgun licenses.

“These bills will erode New Yorkers’ 2nd Amendment Right, will make the sale of legal firearms prohibitive and costly in New York and will cost the state government more money,” said O’Mara.  “Instead of debating these measures, the Legislature should have been working on the late state budget.”
