Assemblyman O’Mara: Bill to Allow Rifle Hunting
in Schuyler County Becomes Law
Assemblyman Tom O’Mara (R,I,C-Big Flats) is pleased to announce that Governor Paterson signed into law legislation that he sponsored to allow the use of rifles for hunting deer in Schuyler County.
“With hunting season right around the corner, this is great news for Schuyler County sportsmen, local sporting goods stores, and the region’s outdoor enthusiasts,” said O’Mara. “Hunting is an important upstate tradition and I am confident that this new law will help promote the region’s outdoors industry."
In addition to promoting hunting, the law also seeks to help control the deer population in Schuyler County and surrounding regions.
“In the surrounding counties where the implementation of rifle hunting has occurred, we have seen a drop in the deer population and a decrease in crop damage and auto collisions caused by deer,” remarked O’Mara.
Assemblyman O’Mara noted that Schuyler County now joins 15 other New York counties including: Alleghany, Cattaraugus, Chemung, Chenango, Herkimer, Madison, Montgomery, Oneida, Oswego, Otsego, Schoharie, Steuben, Tioga, Yates, and a portion of Broome County that allow for the use of rifles to hunt deer.
