Law Will Provide Village of Nichols with New Water Source
Assemblyman Tom O’Mara (R,I,C-Big Flats) is pleased to announce that Governor
Paterson today signed into law legislation he sponsored that allows the Village of Nichols to use
land that was designated as parkland as the site for a new well and clean water source.  The law
also requires the village to set aside another parcel of land of equal or greater value to be used as
parkland.

“A clean and reliable water source is critical to the maintenance and growth of the Village of
Nichols and the health and well-being of its residents,” said O’Mara.  “I am pleased that I could
do my part to help the Village of Nichols change the designation of this land so it can be used as a
reliable clean water source.”

Assemblyman O’Mara noted that in June 1994, the private community water provider in the Village
of Nichols lost its production well located on Johnson Street due to ground water contamination (nitrates).
Since then, the water supply has come solely from a second well located on River Road in the village.
However, the Department of Environmental Conservation requires municipal/community water systems to
have two drinking water sources, making it imperative for the village to secure an additional water source.

"This law will make certain that the Village of Nichols has two water sources, ensuring the reliability of the
village’s water system for years to come,” remarked O’Mara.
