O’Mara: Texting Ban Will Make State’s Roads and Highways Safer
Assemblyman Tom O’Mara (R,I,C-Big Flats) today announced that Governor Paterson signed into law a bill that prohibits texting while driving. Assemblyman O’Mara helped to pass the measure in the Assembly and noted that the law will help make New York’s streets and highways safer by prohibiting ‘texting’ and the use of other handheld electronic devices while driving.
"All drivers, but especially young drivers, need to be focused on the road, not their cell phones. By prohibiting texting while driving, we can cut down on unnecessary distractions and accidents,” remarked O’Mara. “I am pleased I could do my part in helping to enact this important public safety measure, and I am confident that the law will discourage motorists from engaging in the unsafe practice of texting while driving."
Assemblyman O’Mara added that the statewide texting while driving ban carries a fine of up to $150.
