Assemblyman O’Mara Helps Secure Grants for Area Libraries

Assemblyman Tom O’Mara (R,I,C-Big Flats) is pleased to announce that the Chemung County Library District will receive over $113,000 in construction grants from the
State for improvements to the Big Flats Library, the Steele Memorial Library and the West Elmira Library.

“Public libraries are a valuable resource for educating our children and serve as an important source of information for adults and seniors who use the facility for free reading materials and internet access,” said O’Mara. “Libraries are also a vital tool for job seekers looking for employment.”

"Through the grants, Big Flats Library will receive $41,479 for the installation of American with Disability Act (ADA)-compliant doors and the replacement of 68 windows with low UV glass windows. The Steele Memorial Library will receive $32,500 for the replacement of light fixtures and renovations to the facility's parking lot to rebuild accessible parking
spaces and ramps.  West Elmira Library will receive $39,537 for the installation of American with Disability Act (ADA)-compliant doors and the replacement of 68 windows with low UV glass windows.

“The Chemung County Library District is very pleased to receive three grants from the state of New York.  The grants will improve patron access to these facilities and make needed improvements and updates that will enhance the library’s services for all patrons.  With 50% of the costs of these construction programs covered by the state of New York, we can better utilize local tax dollars to continue to provide top-of-the-line public library services locally,” said Jim Sleeth, director of the Chemung County Library District.

“This funding will help keep our libraries up-to-date and allows more of our local tax dollars to be used to update technologies and purchase new books,” said O’Mara.  “By keeping our libraries in good condition, we can make certain that future generations have access to these important learning centers.”
