O’Mara: Governor Signs Bill into Law Allowing Firefighters to Carry out Official Duties without Possessing a Commercial Driver’s License

Assemblyman Tom O’Mara (R,I,C-Big Flats) is pleased to announce that Governor Paterson has just signed legislation into law ensuring that volunteer firefighters will be able to operate their emergency vehicles in Memorial Day celebrations throughout the state and conduct other official duties without possessing a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

“This law will give the region’s volunteer firefighters the ability to participate in Memorial Day parades with their fire trucks and other heavy equipment,” said O’Mara. “It is important for our volunteer firefighters to have a visible presence in the community to help with recruitment efforts, ensuring that New York’s communities continue to have the right number of highly-trained first responders.”

Assemblyman O’Mara noted that the law also exempts fire vehicles from CDL requirements when being used for official duties including training, funerals, and hydrant maintenance.

“This year’s Memorial Day celebration would not have been the same without fire trucks participating in the parades and I am pleased that Governor Paterson signed this legislation into law in such a timely fashion.  I would like to wish everyone a safe and fun Memorial Day weekend and remind folks to remember the brave men and women who have fought and continue to fight in defense of our liberties and freedom,” concluded O’Mara.

Assemblyman O’Mara was a co-sponsor on the Assembly’s version of the bill.
