Assemblyman Tom O’Mara (R,C-Horseheads) applauds the U.S. Postal Service for reissuing the Purple Heart stamp.
“Reissuing the Purple Heart stamp is a great way to honor the men and women who have shed their blood for the defense of the nation,” said O’Mara. “With men and women currently serving our country in Afghanistan and Iraq, we must do our part at home to honor them at every opportunity.”
The Purple Heart stamp was first issued as a 37-cent stamp on May 30, 2003 to honor U.S. military personnel killed or wounded in action. It is being reissued to also coincide with the latest increase in postage to 39 cents.
George Washington designed the original version of the then-Badge of Military Merit at his Newburgh headquarters in 1782.
“Memorial Day weekend is here, and it is a time to reflect on the sacrifices our men and women in the armed force have made and continue to make in defense of our liberties,” remarked O’Mara. “The reissuing of the Purple Heart stamp is another way for Americans to say ‘thank you’ to the veterans of today and tomorrow who make the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.”
“Please take a moment this busy weekend to remember the sacrifices our military men and women of all ages make for us.”
