Assemblyman Tom O’Mara (R,C-Horseheads) and his Assembly minority colleagues today unveiled the final report of the Assembly Minority Task Force on Sex Crimes Against Children and Women. The findings showcase the urgent need for a civil confinement policy and other measures to further protect the public from sexual predators.
O’Mara said the legislative package includes measures such as a tough civil confinement law and expansion of New York’s Sex Offender Registry, part of Megan’s Law.
“Our legislation would prohibit convicted sex offenders from living near schools and day care centers after their release from prison, increase the public notification of the whereabouts of sex offenders, and require all levels of sex offenders be listed on the Department of Criminal Justice Services’ Web site,” said O’Mara.
Assemblyman O’Mara and his Assembly minority colleagues further set the standard by including the elimination of the statute of limitations for violent sex crimes and limits on plea bargaining sex offender registration violations.
“Over the past year, we have gathered tens of thousands of signatures in support of our efforts,” said O’Mara. “It is clear New York’s citizens want civil confinement and other legislation that would keep the most dangerous sex offenders locked away in secure facilities if they are deemed threats to society. I am calling on the Assembly speaker to hear the call and allow sensible action be taken to protect our families and loved ones.”
